MISSION
We aim to expand LA residents’ access to free or low-cost legal services by providing detailed information on nonprofits in LA that provide various legal aids.
Our Story
After working at a nonprofit that offers free legal services, Alice, one of our co-founders, understands the obstacles faced by low-income LA residents when struggling to find the right nonprofit with the right legal services they need. For weeks they wait to get a call back from the nonprofit. However, people do not always get help. Sometimes, it is a referral to another nonprofit or a “sorry” voicemail. Even if the nonprofit can take the case, many are due to appear in court before the help arrives, not to mention those who are survivors of violence and want a restraining order. As a result, frustrated LA residents call multiple nonprofits a day without a guide.
This experience motivated Alice to find a solution. With the available resources, Alice and Julian recognize a mismatch between clients and organizations in the searching process that results in time wasted for both clients and nonprofits. Thus, they built Find Legal Aid L.A., a platform that details the legal services each nonprofit provides to LA residents at little to no cost. They hope that this platform could expand people’s access to legal services and help them find the right organization efficiently.
Haoming (Alice) Yang:
Alice is a junior at the University of Southern California, studying public policy and economics. She is interested in policy work and the legal field. After working at a nonprofit, she recognized the limited resources and information LA residents had to obtain access to legal services. This issue motivated her to build Find Legal Aid L.A. as the first step to expanding access to legal services. Alice is also planning on going to law school after graduation and becoming a lawyer in the future to better provide legal services to low-income people.
Julian Guo:
Julian is a student at the University of Southern California and double major in public policy and economics. He is interested in learning more about nonprofit management, especially NGOs that operate across country borders.
